Member Meeting - Department of Labor

You manage volunteers but do you understand the legal ramifications of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Volunteer Act?  How about the FLSA rules for  volunteers and  interns, paid or unpaid?  By law, what is an intern (vs. an extern) ? With one action, under FLSA,  you can change your volunteer into an employee status , entitled to all benefits and paid leave? By law, can your employees volunteer for you? Are you aware not knowing or understanding the law still makes you culpable in lawsuits or FLSA proceedings?

Finally, how can you protect your agency by clearly explaining these laws to your Human Resources manager or CEO and still survive?

Presenter: Cissy Hansen

Cissy has over 25 years of experience in nonprofit strategic planning, marketing, program development and volunteer management. From a thousand volunteers in multiple locations for an Ohio health care system to as few as four in a small nonprofit, volunteers and the growth of volunteer management as a profession have always been her passion.

In April, 2001, when Ohio Senate Bill 187(criminal background checks for volunteers hit the nonprofits), she traveled throughout the state, teaching the  effect on NPO’s and how to minimize the financial impact yet still remain within the law.

She is former Director, Volunteer Center- Dayton region and former Director, Volunteer Center, Tucson and Southern Arizona. Cissy has taught over 40 fee-based courses/programs in volunteer management, strategic planning, marketing and fund development, seminars for not-for-profit organizations in the greater Dayton area, Youngstown, OH, Columbus, OH, UW Volunteer Management series courses and in Tucson Arizona. She has been a guest lecturer at Wright State University and presented at Dayton corporations on developing employee engagement programs as volunteers for local non-profits.

Of numerous recognitions and awards received over 20 years, Cissy will tell you she is most proud of being named the Outstanding Volunteer Administrator by MVAVA in 2012.
